Flapping Sprocket is the online showcase of engineer/artist, Brian Matthews.
Since 1998, he has made 17 pairs of wings varying in materials and operation from simple pulley opening to pneumatics and robotic control. In the early days, he was one of ~5 people who had images online of hand-built wings. He has since sent out about 50 instructional emails explaining how to build your own pair of wings to similarly dispositioned souls.
More recently, Brian has taken an interest in Arduino animatronic programming in conjunction with custom 3-D printed parts to make interesting creatures. He has been featured on 3dprint.com and has been interviewed and awarded multiple ‘Editors Choice’ awards from Maker Faire, an annual event created by Make magazine.
Currently, his combined skills of engineering, designing, and building is put to use within the Global Trade Show Production team at Mattel Inc. – with a focus on mechatronic displays/props and CNC programming.
